Challenge your knowledge

Just for fun, you can challenge yourself to online quizzes from the World Book Encyclopedia. Just go to www.worldbook.com and click on the link below the Trivia Question of the Day for a number of different quizzes on any subject imaginable. I took a couple of quizzes in the Science and Nature category, and surprisingly, I didn't do to bad thanks to the information I've learned throughout this class. Give it a try, you might surprise yourself.

Title: Holiday Survival Guide

But life gets in the way. Schedules are hectic, if not impossible. And amid it all, you're forced to consider thorny business-related matters such as party-date protocol and gift-giving etiquette that can make or break you, professionally speaking.

We asked some experts to help sort out a few dilemmas.

YOUR DILEMMA: I would like to throw an environmentally conscious event. Although I don't want to be wasteful, I also don't want to look cheap.

OUR ADVICE: Although it's not easy being green, it is more feasible than it used to be. Sarah Finlayson, creative manager of catering company Blue Plate (312/421-6666; www.blueplatechicago.com), offers party packages with biodynamic wines, organic and sustainable produce and dishware made of environmentally friendly bamboo. The company works with florist A.Vision Chicago (773/227-5700; www.avisionchicago.com), which forages forest floors to create dramatic, found-object centerpieces.

Greg Christian Catering and Events (312/666-4466; www.gregchristian.com) goes so far as to compost its own waste and track the distance ingredients traveled to get to its kitchen.

With Mr. Christian's help, the 2007 U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo and numerous festivities connected to it were eco-minded yet elegant, says Doug Widener, executive director of the not-for-profit council's Chicago chapter.

'We used locally sourced foods and linens, dishes and glass' instead of disposable products, says Mr. Widener, 37, of the meals at McCormick Place's West Pavilion, which has received the council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. 'Instead of cut flower arrangements, we had living centerpieces with gourds, apples and live plants.' When throwing events for a large number of people the expo had 22,000 attendees Mr. Widener's group offsets the carbon emissions its gatherings incur by finding ways to support renewable energy, reforestation and energy efficiency projects. I like this article because it goes along with the thought that people have a fast paced life, and they do not have time to conserve. But this gives some pointers for all of us int his busy holiday season.
